On Saturday, April 27th, in collaboration with Eco El Paso, the City of El Paso, El Paso Water, and the City of El Paso Parks and Recreation Department, the Paso del Norte Trail hosted Celebrate Trails Day: Planting Roots with the Community on the Playa Drain Trail.
With the help of over 130 volunteers and the generous donations from our sponsors, 25 trees were planted along the Playa Drain Trail from Mimosa Avenue to Durrill Road. Trees are an essential amenity that enhance the trail experience by providing cooling effects, improving air quality, and promoting physical activity, among other benefits.
We were joined by volunteers from the community, the Lower Valley Neighborhood Association, Ysleta High School, Riverside High School, the Army Volunteer Corp, UTEP’s Students for Public Health (SPH), the City of El Paso Climate Fellows, Cathedral High School, and HARMAN. Thanks to the incredible work by volunteers and our partners, the tree planting went smoothly with all 25 trees planted in under two hours.
As part of the larger Celebrate Trails Day festivities sponsored by the Rails-to-Trails Conservancy (RTC), participants received merchandise from RTC and refreshments, including sparkling water and nonalcoholic beer provided by RTC’s title sponsor, Athletic Brewing. We were also joined by several local organizations that provided resources to the participants of the event.
We express our sincerest gratitude to the sponsors of Celebrate Trails Day: Planting Roots with the Community for their support of the event. Thank you to Eastside Discount Nursery, for donating all of the 25 trees planted on the trail. These trees will be on the trail for generations to come. We would also like to thank HARMAN, for being a Seedling Sponsor and volunteering with us to help plant 25 trees. Thank you to Visit El Paso for their support in acquiring event materials.
Thank you to our partners, sponsors, and most importantly volunteers for making this Celebrate Trails Day a memorable one!
